Notes
1. There appear to be two primary sources for the name Jechiel.
- The colophon of David Grünhut's (c.1650) book ספר טוב רואי
(Sefer Tov Roi), which provides his lineage, lists Shimon Günzburg as
the son of Abraham, son of Rabbi Jechiel from Porto (likely Porto near
Verona in Northern Italy).
- The gravestone of Shmuel Zanvil Ulmo, who died in 1604, lists
four generations of his ancestry, including: Shimon son of Eliezer from
the city Günzburg, leader of the region of Swabia and Torah scholar, son of Jechiel, son of Shmuel, chief judge in Ulmo.
While both provide Jechiel as the grandfather's name of Shimon, they
have important discrepancies: different father names and no reference
to Porto in the latter case. Nevertheless, there is an additional
source, which corroborates Shimon's father's name being Eliezer: the
Memorbuch of Pfersee. It lists Shimon son of Reb Eliezer Ulma from
Günzburg. Taken together, the tentative conclusion here is that Shimon
is the son of Eliezer, son of Jechiel, with no assumption about
Jechiel's origins.
